According to an old saying, just like there’s more than one way to peel an orange, there are countless ways to say no to your boss. Yeah, we know it is difficult to say no to them, but that shouldn’t stop you from being able to say no if needed out of the fear that you might lose your job or end up damaging your career.
Also, finding the right way to put that refusal across will help you make your denial a bit more gentler and when combined with a logical reason, it will become all the more easy for your boss to accept it.

1. Assess your reason
The strategy you use to refuse an instruction or request from your boss will mainly depend upon that instruction and the reasons why you don’t want to do it. So, assess how strong your reason stands, by comparing it with the request from your boss – maybe you could write it down using pencils, markers or any branded pens lying around.
Evaluate whether that request violates your cultural and religious beliefs, your rights as a person or is it something that you don’t want to do. If it’s the latter, you will have to decide whether the request is a genuine one in terms of your work or not. And if this is the case, then you might have to use different ways than the one you were going to provided it is something that’s not explained in your job description.
2. Take the initiative
You do have an idea what kind of work you can do and cannot. So, if you get a request which you feel you cannot fulfill or don’t want to, then do not make your boss wait till the last moment. Instead, take the initiative and start the conversation the moment you get an opportunity. Present your boss with your understanding of the situation, the reasons why you’re not willing to take up that work and any substitute options that you have in mind, which could help your boss achieve the same result.
3. Be logical
Unless and until you are in control of your emotions, never approach your boss with a refusal at your hand. If the boss’s demand has made you upset in any way, wait until your mind has calmed down, gone through the process of assessing your reason, impact on company or boss and the alternative options. Be a step ahead and think of what type of objections your boss will raise and how you can logically respond to them. Do not take these personally and try to remain objective by thinking about the company. For example, even if a company does not allow their employees to wear traditional head scarves, you can still manage to convince them by putting across how diversity among staff can help the firm in the long run and attract new customers and employees.
4. Be truthful
If you keep giving excuses to your boss’s odd requests, there are chances that one day they will find out that you do not pay any heed. This will ultimately result in them losing their trust on you and may end also up damaging your career. So, be truthful about your carefully assessed reason for refusal and your boss will most likely acknowledge and understand your point of view.
For example, if your reason to avoid that business meeting is that your ex-wife may follow you and disrupt it somehow, you may have to think ahead of time about how much detail you have to divulge to your boss.
You very well know what you are and aren’t capable of. So, trust your instincts and go ahead with them. Remember, never initiate a conversation with the word “No”. Give logical, truthful and realistic explanations to your boss and they might just agree with you. Assure them that you are working in the best interests of the company and how those alternative options can benefit the firm and everyone at the workplace. Being good at convincing will also make your boss trust your judgments and accept any future refusals willingly.
